In Luke 8:43 we find a sick woman who had
spent all of her money on “physicians” who were unable to help her. As a last ditch effort she came to Jesus, the
one she had heard could work miracles in the lives of the broken and the
hopeless. As she reached out her hand
and touched Him, she found the healing that had alluded her so long.
Anyone who has spent much time in the church
is aware of the miraculous healing power of the Only Son of God come to
earth. We pray for His healing touch, we
plead for mercy in our hours of physical distress. Sometimes God answers yes, and sometimes the
sky seems silent.
Job encountered this same thing as he became
a victim to tragic loss and sickness. He
and His friends debate and speculate as to what God is up to for well over
thirty chapters … then God shows up.
He does not address Job’s questions as to
why tragedy has befallen him. He does
not address Job’s desire to know how long he will have to endure. He simply begins listing all of the mysteries
of the earth that He, God, knows effortlessly.
Job gets a very different answer than he expected. Instead of addressing the physical, God
reveals His character and majesty.
Friends, I think we each need a Job
experience with God. Our situations will
change, we will get sick and we will get well and I am the last person who
would tell you not to pray for healing in your time of need. However, in your pursuit, look for something
bigger. Look for a glimpse of character
as He reveals Himself in His Word. It is
that glimpse that will have the power to change your heart as well as your
body. Though your situation will change,
His character will not.
I notice that at the end of God’s monologue
in the latter chapters of Job, Job finds healing. Not just physical, that came later. He found a healing of his soul. His doubt drew back into the sea like a tide
fleeing from the sand. He found peace
where he was.
What kind of healing do you need? Physical, emotional? The Great Physician is more than able to meet
you where you are at, but on His terms no yours. Open yourself up to all that it means to be
touched by your Abba.
“Is anyone
among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray
over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who
is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will
be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another
and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous
person has great power as it is working.”
James 5:14-16
Great Physician
Oh broken heart, shattered dream
You’ve been my friends for too long
The valley dark’s longer than it seemed
Are You here my Savior
Oh my God they say You
Made the lame to walk and the blind to
see
But can you reach this broken heart
Oh my God I’m on my knees
Great Physician, please heal me
I tried to stand and to be strong
Like they said I should be
I tried to run and hide away
But they always found me
Oh my God they say You
Made the lame to walk and the blind to
see
But can you reach this broken heart
Oh my God I’m on my knees
Great Physician, please heal me
As I draw close and turn to you
Will you wash me in Your love
As I let go, give it to You
Will you take these broken pieces of my
life
And make me whole again
Oh my God they say You
Made the lame to walk and the blind to
see
But can you reach this broken heart
Oh my God I’m on my knees
Great Physician, please heal me
